How To Get The Best Candid Photos at your Wedding

As a wedding photographer, one of my greatest joys is capturing the raw, unfiltered emotions of the day. The candid moments – those genuine smiles, tear-filled eyes, and joyful laughter – often become the most cherished photos in a couple’s wedding album. While these moments happen naturally, there are a few things brides and grooms can do to help ensure that their candid photos are as authentic and beautiful as possible. Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare.

Be Present in the Moment:

One of the best things you can do is simply allow yourself to be fully present. Forget about the camera, the timeline, and the details. When you're focused on your partner, your loved ones, and the joy of the day, that natural happiness will shine through in every candid shot.

2

Trust Your Photographer:

You’ve chosen a professional you trust to capture your day, so let go of any worries about how you’ll look in the photos. Trusting your photographer allows you to relax and enjoy the day, knowing they’ll capture all the important moments beautifully, even when you’re not posing for the camera.

3

Interact with Each Other and Your Guests:

Some of the most meaningful candid moments come from genuine interactions. Whether you’re whispering to each other, sharing a quiet moment, or laughing with your friends, these interactions make for the best photos. Don’t be afraid to embrace the emotions and spontaneity of the day.

4

Keep Moving Naturally:

Don’t feel like you have to freeze or perform for the camera. Whether you’re walking down the aisle, sharing a first look, or mingling with guests, keep your movements fluid and natural. This will help your photographer capture the flow and energy of the day in an authentic way.

5

Let Emotions Flow:

Wedding days are filled with a wide range of emotions – from excitement and joy to happy tears and tender moments. Don’t hold back. If you feel like crying, laugh through your tears or let them fall. If you’re bursting with joy, let it show. The more you allow yourself to feel, the more your photos will reflect the true emotion of the day.

6

Enjoy the Little Moments:

Some of the most beautiful candid photos happen during the in-between moments – the bride adjusting her veil, the groom stealing a glance at his bride, or the quiet moments before the ceremony. Embrace these quieter moments and enjoy them fully. Your photographer will be watching for these intimate, emotional exchanges.

7

Forget the Camera Exists

A great candid shot happens when you’re not aware of the camera. Don’t feel like you need to smile or pose unless your photographer specifically asks for it. The best moments are often those when you’re completely absorbed in the day, and not thinking about being photographed.

8

Focus on Each Other:

Your wedding day is about your love and commitment to each other, so make sure to focus on your partner throughout the day. When you're locked in an emotional exchange or a joyful moment together, your photographer will capture that connection without the need for direction.

9

Trust Your Wedding Team:

The more relaxed you are, the more candid moments your photographer can capture. Lean on your wedding planner, coordinator, or trusted friends and family to handle the details so you can stay stress-free and in the moment. This will allow for more natural, carefree shots that reflect your true emotions.

10

Create Meaningful Traditions or Personal Touches:

Whether it’s writing personal vows, exchanging letters before the ceremony, or having a quiet moment together after the ceremony, these meaningful gestures not only make the day more special but also create beautiful, candid photo opportunities.

By focusing on the love, joy, and connections around you, your candid wedding photos will naturally reflect the heart and soul of your celebration. It’s about letting go, being in the moment, and trusting that every smile, laugh, and tear will be captured in its truest form.
